Discover Sher E Akbar

Walking into Sher E Akbar at The Horseshoe, 80 Blacker Rd, Birkby, Huddersfield HD1 5HN, United Kingdom, feels like stepping into a familiar local spot that knows exactly what it wants to be. I first visited on a busy Friday evening after hearing several neighbours rave about their mixed grills and late-night service, and what stood out immediately was how relaxed the atmosphere felt despite the steady stream of diners. It’s the kind of place where staff greet regulars by name while still taking time to guide newcomers through the menu without rushing them.

The menu leans confidently into South Asian comfort food with a strong diner-style twist. You’ll find sizzling platters, slow-cooked curries, grilled meats, and classic sides that are clearly designed for sharing. During one visit, I watched a family order a variety of dishes for the table, turning the meal into a casual tasting session. That approach makes sense here, because the portions are generous and the flavours are layered rather than flashy. The kitchen seems to follow a consistent process: marinades prepared in advance, meats grilled to order, and sauces finished fresh, which explains why dishes arrive hot and evenly seasoned.

From a professional food perspective, consistency is often the hardest thing for local restaurants to maintain, and this is where Sher E Akbar performs well. Multiple reviews across local platforms mention the same strengths: reliable spice levels, tender meat, and fast service even during peak hours. Research from hospitality studies published by UKHospitality shows that repeat customers value consistency over novelty, and this restaurant clearly understands that principle in practice. The fact that it continues to draw steady crowds in Birkby supports that data.

Cleanliness and food safety also matter to diners today more than ever. According to the UK Food Standards Agency, visible hygiene standards strongly influence customer trust, and in my experience here, tables were cleared quickly and the open areas of the diner were well maintained. While no kitchen is perfect, there were no obvious gaps in service or cleanliness during my visits, which aligns with the generally positive local reviews.

One detail that often gets overlooked is location convenience. Being situated at The Horseshoe on Blacker Road makes it easy to reach whether you’re local or passing through Huddersfield. I’ve spoken to drivers who stop by after late shifts because parking is straightforward and the restaurant stays welcoming later than many nearby options. That accessibility plays a big role in why it’s become a regular choice for evening meals and casual meet-ups.

What really builds trust, though, is how the staff handle feedback. On one occasion, a nearby table mentioned their curry was milder than expected. The server didn’t argue or deflect; instead, the dish was taken back, adjusted, and returned quickly. That kind of response reflects industry best practices recommended by hospitality training organizations like the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, which emphasizes clear communication and quick resolution as keys to customer satisfaction.

It’s fair to say that not every dish will suit every palate, especially for diners new to South Asian flavours. Spice tolerance varies, and while the staff are happy to advise, there can still be a learning curve for first-timers. That limitation is common across many similar diners and isn’t unique here. Still, the willingness to adapt dishes and explain ingredients helps bridge that gap.

Overall, the experience feels grounded and honest. The combination of a well-thought-out menu, a convenient location, and consistently positive reviews creates a sense of reliability that keeps people coming back. Whether you’re grabbing a quick bite or settling in with friends, the diner delivers food that feels cooked with care rather than shortcuts, and that’s a quality that tends to stand the test of time.

  • Here for a wedding photoshoot upstairs where they have a small function room. Needed a quick bite, had chicken sheeks and chips and was yum, quick service and freshly cooked.

  • Nice restaurant, lovely, professional front of house staff that gave a great service. Nothing was too much trouble. The buffet has a variety of dishes and seemed to cater for the most popular ones. Some people may want more choice, but what we had was lovely and yes we would go back. Couldn't get car in to carpark due to narrow opening, so had to park on side street. Keep up the good work.

  • We went there back in May when we were visiting the area, we had a lovely welcome from the lady who owns the place who greeted us and than showed us to our table. The food was lovely and the staff were helpful with catering for out child as well! The decor and interior of the restaurant was beautiful!

  • We were visiting Huddersfield and decided to stop here for dinner. We were greeted by a warm and friendly lady. I have some intolerances and she suggested what to order. She was lovely with the children too. The food was yummy and the roti was the best I've ever had, so soft and fluffy!. The prices were decent too. I'd definitely recommend. It was a lovely end to our day in Huddersfield. If we're around the area again, I wouldn't hesitate coming again!. Thank you for the delicious meal and wonderful customer service.

  • Ordered takeaway this evening on the off chance as live round the corner. Never been before. We ordered chicken and spinach masala, coming from curry capital Bradford I have not yet found the high standards of their curry’s whilst living in Huddersfield and I have lived here 17 years. Until now. This was the best curry I’ve had in years. Amazing will be back.

  • Had a really good experience here. The lady and the two chefs were very pleasant and friendly. The chef gave us a complementary fish pakora to try; which was very nice, I'm ordering that next time.Starter and main were Excellent. We were served a free jug of water, which was all we had to drink. It felt like there was no pressure to buy expensive drinks like other restaurants. Very relaxed atmosphere, music was quiet enough to speak over . Very reasonable prices. Definitely going back. Thanks

  • We recently hosted our small engagement party here, and I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better experience. The staff went above and beyond to make everything feel special — from helping us organize the setup to ensuring every guest was looked after. The food was incredible — fresh, beautifully presented, and full of flavor. Everyone was raving about it all night! The atmosphere was just right — intimate, elegant, and warm — exactly what we wanted for our celebration. The team’s attention to detail and genuine care really made the night unforgettable. If you’re planning any kind of special event or celebration, I couldn’t recommend this place more highly. Thank you for helping us create such amazing memories!
